An increase in the number of burglaries of football players in France is alarming the police, Le Figaro reported on Thursday. From now on, the competent authorities are concerned that specialized “gangs” are working.
It is no longer uncommon for football players to temporarily leave the sports sections in order to invite themselves to the news pages. With their very high salaries and the guarantee of their absence for matches, players are a prime target for burglars and burglaries are on the rise. The rise in burglaries is putting police on alert, Le Figaro reported on Thursday.
In an internal memo distributed to all services, which the national daily newspaper was able to see, police counted 21 break-ins in 2021, up eight from the previous year. Since the start of 2022, seven footballers have already paid the price for this increasingly common practice.
The competent authorities are worried that “gangs” specializing in burglary of football players are now rampant. “If some of the cases can be attributed to theft of opportunities committed in prestigious areas, then more specialized groups are working,” Commissioner William Hippert, head of Sirasco (Criminal Intelligence Service) assures in the Figaro columns.
There have been countless burglaries in French football in recent months. For example, the robbery of Marquinhos’ house in the spring of 2021 shocked public opinion. On the sidelines of PSG’s loss to Nantes, the defender’s father was beaten in the chest and head and forced to escort the thieves (at least two people) into the house. The father of the Parisian player and the two daughters of the 52-year-old man were locked in a room before the perpetrators left.
Recently, Morgan Schneiderlin from Nice also had a very bad experience. “A man entered our house through the window,” a woman from the French community said on Instagram immediately after the facts, at the end of January. We were very scared, but more scared than bad. People are ready for anything, c “It’s incredible. Fortunately, there is always someone at home. There were even a few of us then, but some are not afraid of anything!”
